The AI Engineer role has exploded over the last few years thanks to LLMs, but it is still in its earliest stage — a hybrid between Software Developer and ML Engineer that is particularly attractive for pivoting from other industry roles. We dig into what the role used to be and all the possibilities it can be today, and how to pivot into the AI world without a graduate degree, guided by someone who has worked across traditional ML and Generative AI Engineering.

It is rarely a technical-capability problem — it is a deeper confusion: treating AI as a tool when it is in fact infrastructure.
